- Apart from using Debian in various internal projects (mysql server,
- knowledge base, document server, etc. etc.) we are currently packaging a
- stand-alone file server to be used with our flagship product.
-

-

- Debian has allowed us to break from using RH (ew) by providing a
- minimalistic, simple distro that we can configure ourselves without needing
- a bully GUI or X-Server running - although the desktop implementations of
- Gnome and KDE are nice. We also appreciate the testing process that Debian
- takes into account (we use Sarge primarily but Sid on some personal systems)
- and know that what we get in Sarge is pretty stable to begin with.

- We rent apartments and we use our IT infrastructure to manage apartment
- bookings and the accounting. We used one Windows 2003 SBS connected to five
- Windows 2000 workstations until 2007. In mid 2007 there was a change in the
- licensing policy of our former software, which was FoxPro-based. I looked
- for alternatives. Having heard of Linux, I tested Ubuntu 7.04 on one
- workstation for about six months. All workstations were migrated to Ubuntu
- 7.10 when it came out, and a final migration took place in spring 2008 when
- Ubuntu 8.04 was adopted for all the IT infrastructure (both server and
- workstations), as I finally found viable replacements for all the software
- that we once used under Windows. However, I do not like the way that Ubuntu
- has evolved after 10.04. Consequently all computers, that is, server and
- workstations, have been migrated to Debian Squeeze on August 20th 2012.
-

-
-

- The choice was my sole responsibility. I chose Debian because it was the
- sensible choice, as I was familiar with a Debian-based distribution and the
- Debian ecosystem. Debian consistently provides stability and a good
- level of resource efficiency.

- We use Debian Woody (kernel 2.4.18) to "hold" our link to

- At the CS Department of Montana Tech, we run Debian 3.0 on our two main
- department servers (one's the nfs server, the other's the main server
- people use for interactive off-campus logins), and on 11 other hosts
- set up as a general-purpose lab used by roughly 60 students of three of

-

-

- We have no assigned systems administrator, so it was very important that
- our systems run with a minimum of fuss, day in and day out. Debian 3.0
- has lived up to this challenge: the students use our servers for
- networking assignments, C and C++ programming, and the systems have
- been trouble-free.
-

-

- Debian's package system (we usually just access it via dselect) is
- a big win. Security updates are hassle-free, and our systems meet
- our current needs quite comfortably. I've used a variety of
- commercial Unixes, and Debian's packaging system and reliability
- beats them all, hands-down. (For what it's worth, I've been a
- full-time systems administrator in both academic and industry
- settings, so my experience with commercial systems has been both
- prolonged and painful...)

- We use Debian since 2004-2005. We have 30 servers currently running Debian
- Lenny. The services we provide are: Academic system (PostgreSQL database,
- Apache2, PHP5), DNS (Bind9), monitoring (Munin, Nagios3, MRTG),
- authentication (OpenLDAP), file sharing (OpenLDAP, Samba), virtual machine
- (Xen), mirror and other services (rsync, Apache2, Git), webserver (Apache2,
- PHP5, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Drupal 6), streaming (Icecast), security
- (Fail2ban, iptables).
-

-
-

- We chose Debian GNU/Linux for these reasons: Stability, easy security
- updates, easily downloadable packages with a mirror leaf in our network,
- customizable to our needs, and the variety of packages in the
- distribution. Thanks for the great work you are doing.
